Federer and Djokovic Play Matches in Cincinnati, Halep Overcomes Injury to Advance While Williams Drops Out, Iowa Becomes 11th State to Allow Sports Betting and Tokyo Shortens Triathlon Event in Response to Extreme Summer Heat
The Cincinnati Masters, or Western & Southern Open as it's currently called, is heating up. Today will see Wimbledon finalists Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer square off against Spain's Pablo Carreño Busta and Russian Andrey Rublev, respectively. Wimbledon 2019's Women's Singles champion Simona Halep faces off against American player Madison Keys today after defeating Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova yesterday 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Halep was recently forced to drop out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto due to an injury to her foot, but has since recovered. Halep's Wimbledon co-finalist, Serena Williams, did in fact have to miss the Cincinnati Masters due to a back injury.
The Associated Press reports that Iowa is becoming the 11th U.S. state to legalize sports betting. So far, 6 of Iowa's 19 state-regulated casinos are ready to sign up players and take on bets. According to the article, "Casinos in Altoona, Bettendorf, Osceola and Waterloo will offer betting on-site and through a mobile app" and "Casinos in Burlington and Council Bluffs will offer on-site betting only for now until their mobile systems are set up". Legal betting begins at noon local time today.
The AP also reports that an Olympic women's triathlon qualifying event in Tokyo has been shortened due to high summer temperatures. The running portion of the triathlon was reduced from 10 kilometers to 5 kilometers by the International Triathlon Union (ITU). The ITU said:
"There was full consensus on all parties for the decision of the ITU medical delegate and ITU technical delegates to shorten the run distance to 5km, considering the athletes' health."
